In plain words
Today even scientists develop only physical things. They make aeroplanes that travel many miles a minute. But however many physical things are made, all of them must perish one day! Making them is no great thing. We must develop what is good for the people and brings them welfare. Only when society is safe and well can we be safe and well. But now no one thinks of the good of society. Whoever you look at, it is selfishness and self-interest! There is no one at all who strives for the welfare of the people. That is why the whole world is falling to pieces today. If four people live in one house, the four split up and set up four houses. It is because such a feeling of difference has grown in man that unity has declined. We must now make our unity grow. “My neighbour and I are one. Only our names and forms differ; the God in the two of us is one.” Holding this divine feeling in your heart, carry out your Dharma as a householder. All these are the duties of the world. But the Dharma of the Ātma is one. We must live recognising that principle of the Ātma. We must not depend merely on names and forms; we must trust the principle of the Ātma alone. The Ātma in all is one. That is why I address you as ‘Embodiments of the divine Ātma!’ You too say at times, “I say this with my Ātma looking on”, do you not! Though the body declines, the Ātma lives on. We say that man is born, grows and dies, but man is neither born, nor does he grow, nor does he die. What is born, grows and dies is the body, not the Ātma. Recognise this unity. Whatever anyone says, follow your Ātma, the onlooker within you. We must never let go of it, in any situation.
