In plain words
When my heart grows broad, I too will surely win,” you should think. The cause of winning or of losing is the change in our own feelings! With this in view the Veda said, ‘Manayeva manuṣyāṇāṃ kāraṇaṃ bandhamokṣayoḥ.’ The root cause of hatred or of harmony is our own mind. Every task we do must be done in harmony. We must develop love of God. Then the welfare of the world will surely follow. We must wish for the welfare of all. We must wish for the welfare even of worms and insects. That is why after bhajan we say, “May all the worlds be happy.” All must be well. In that welfare is your own welfare too. If you do not strive for the welfare of all, what comes to you is not welfare but famine. So we must wish that all may be well. God loves the heart of one who wishes for the welfare of all.
What I am telling you is the supreme truth. This is the essence of true Bhakti. What is devotion? It is not some ordinary ocean; it is the ocean of Ānanda. That is “eternal Ānanda, the giver of the highest joy, wisdom itself in form....” That is the Ānanda we must attain.
