Passage 9

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Jealousy, envy, pretence, lust, anger and hatred are not human qualities. Some people do japa, tapas and the rest for Śānti, saying, “I want Śānti, I want Śānti.” But are they finding even a little Śānti? No. Only when you live in Prema can you find Śānti. It is not a thing to be bought in the bazaar; it springs from your own heart. It is born of Prema. Where does Prema come from? It comes from Dharma. Where does Dharma come from? It comes from Satya. “There is no Dharma higher than Satya.” So what comes from Satya is Dharma. What comes from Dharma is Prema. What comes from Prema is Śānti. Only when all these come together does Ahiṃsā come about. Satya, Dharma, Śānti, Prema and Ahiṃsā are our five life-breaths. But today we have forgotten these five life-breaths and have made hateful things such as lust and anger our life-breath. That is why we go through so many hardships. Nourish Satya and Dharma, and you will surely find Śānti.

If you do not strive for the welfare of all, what comes to you is famine!

Whether you believe it or not, within twenty-five or thirty years this whole world will become one. All will become one and gain Bhakti for God from the people of Bhārata. You think ‘Indian culture’ means some customs or other. No, no. ‘Culture’ means the unity of all! Unity is culture. Purity is culture. Only when there is that unity and that purity will you attain divinity. So burn up the hatred and the anger in you. If you make Prema grow, hatred is scorched and anger burns away. Anger and hatred have grown very great in society today. ‘He has earned plenty. He is becoming a big man!’: one looks at another and feels hatred! The loser hates the winner! This is not good. “Well, he did well, and so he won. It was a want in me that defeated me. So I too must make such broad-hearted Prema grow.
