In plain words

18. Character is the touchstone of humanity

To live for an ideal and not for food is character

Teachers are guides; students are the ones who lay the royal road to the future. The honour of mankind, and its strength and capacity, depend on the character of teachers. Character is the touchstone of humanity. Teachers must make due effort to use their learning and knowledge to nourish character and to raise students to a high level. It is character that gives social life its highest excellence. It is character that brings humanity into bud. To live for an ideal and not for food is itself character. A life without character is like a temple without a lamp, a rupee that will not pass, a kite whose string has snapped.
