The invocation· Verses 1–3

1We meditate on the highest truth: on him from whom this world's birth and the rest proceed, whether followed forward or traced back; who knows every thing there is and is his own master; who put the Veda into the first poet's heart, and about whom even the wise are bewildered; in whom the threefold creation is no falsehood, the way fire, water and earth are exchanged one for another to the eye; and who by his own light has cast out deception for all time. 2Here is the highest dharma, with every pretence thrown off, meant for the good who bear no envy. Here is the real thing worth knowing, which grants welfare and tears up the threefold suffering by the root. What need is there of any other? In this holy Bhagavata, made by the great sage, the Lord is held fast in the heart at once, from that very moment, by those of good work who care to listen.
3This is the ripe fruit fallen from the wish-granting tree of the Veda, joined with flowing nectar from Suka's mouth. Drink the Bhagavata, that home of rasa; drink it again and again, you on this earth who have taste and feeling.
