Suta, may it be well with you: you know for what purpose the Lord, master of the Satvatas, was born of Devaki to Vasudeva. Dear one, you should recount that to us who long to hear it, his descent, which is for the safety of all beings and for their flourishing. One who has fallen into the terrible round of rebirth, uttering his name even helplessly, is set free from it that very moment; for fear itself is afraid of that name. Suta, the sages who take shelter at his feet and walk the way of stillness purify at a touch, while the waters of the heavenly river purify only by long resort to them. Who that wishes to be made clean would not listen to the glory of the Bhagavan, him whose deeds are praised by those of holy renown, glory that carries off the stain of Kali?

Tell us, who have faith, of his generous deeds, sung on every side by the wise, his, who takes on his portions in play. Now, wise one, tell the auspicious accounts of Hari's descents, of the Lord who freely enacts his play by his own maya. As for us, we are never sated with the exploits of him whose praise is the highest, which to those who listen with a taste for rasa grow sweeter and sweeter at every step. Together with Rama, so it is told, Kesava performed feats beyond what a mortal can do, the Bhagavan in concealment, wearing the disguise of a man.
