Clarity, passion and darkness are the strands of nature. Joined with them, the supreme Person, who is one, takes here, for this world's upholding and the rest, the names Hari, Virinci and Hara. Of these it is from the one whose body is clarity that what is good comes to men. From earth comes wood, from wood smoke, and from smoke the fire that is made of the three Vedas. So above darkness stands passion, and above passion clarity, in which Brahman is seen. So the sages of old served the Bhagavan beyond the reach of the senses, who is clarity unmixed. Those here who follow after them come to safety. Those who want release leave aside the lords of spirits, terrible in form, and, being peaceable and free of spite, worship the portions of Narayana.

Those whose nature is passion and darkness worship what matches their own temper: the fathers, the spirits, the lords of creatures, wanting wealth and power and children. The Vedas have Vasudeva for their end, and so do the sacrifices; the disciplines have Vasudeva for their end, and so do the rites. Knowledge has Vasudeva for its end, and so does austerity; dharma has Vasudeva for its end, and so does the way one finally goes.
