There I passed thriving districts with their cities and villages, their cattle stations and mines, their hamlets and market towns and walled gardens, their forests and pleasure groves; hills bright with many-coloured ores, trees whose branches elephants had broken, pools of wholesome water, and lotus ponds that the gods come to; ponds made lovely by wandering bees and by birds of bright cry; and thickets dense with reed and bamboo, with clumps of arrow-grass, kusa and hollow cane. Going on quite alone, I came upon a great wood, terrible and fearful to look at, the yard of snakes and owls and jackals. My senses and myself worn out, held by thirst and hungry, I bathed and drank at a pool of the river, and at that touch my weariness left me.

In that forest empty of people I took my seat at the foot of a pipal, and with the self I thought upon the self that stands within the self, as I had heard it taught.
