Welcoming with a smiling look such words as these from the women of the city as they spoke them, Hari went on his way. He to whom no enemy had been born, apprehensive of others out of affection, sent out an army of four divisions to guard the foe of Madhu. Then the son of Sura turned back the Kauravas, who had come a long way and were sick with the parting and firm in their love, and set out for his own city with those dear to him. He passed the Kuru-jangalas and the Pancalas, the Surasenas and the people along the Yamuna, Brahmavarta, Kuruksetra, the Matsyas, and then the Sarasvatas; and crossing the desert country and the lands beyond the Sauviras and Abhiras, the mighty one came, O Bhargava, to Anarta, his horses by then a little tired.

At each place along the way the people of that place came forward with offerings for Hari; and at evening he turned to the western quarter, when the sun had gone down.
