39Are you free of illness, dear one? You look to me with your splendour struck away. Have you gone without honour, or been slighted, or been away too long? 40Have you been struck by things ill-meant and inauspicious, by sounds or the rest? Or was something promised to those who asked in hope, and spoken, and not given? 41Have you not turned away a brahmana, a child, a cow, an old man, a sick man, a woman, a creature come for refuge, you who are a giver of refuge? 42Have you gone to a woman not to be gone to, or to one who may be but was dishonoured? Or were you beaten on the road by those no better than you, or by your equals?
43Have you eaten before the old and the young who should have eaten with you? Have you done some contemptible act that cannot be borne? 44Or is it that, deprived of the dearest of all, of the heart that is your own kinsman, you think yourself empty and undone for good? For nothing else is this pain of yours.
