So this has been told, what you asked of me: what is for men who are dying, and among men for those who have some understanding. But one who wants the lustre that learning gives should worship the lord of prayer; one who wants his senses strong, Indra; one who wants children, the lords of creatures. One who wants beauty, the goddess Maya; one who wants brightness, the fire; one who wants riches, the Vasus; and the strong man who wants valour, the Rudras. One who wants food to eat, Aditi; one who wants heaven, the sons of Aditi; one who wants a kingdom, the All-Gods; one who would win the people over, the Sadhyas.

One who wants long life should worship the two Asvin gods; one who wants his body to thrive, Ila; a man who wants a firm standing, heaven and earth, the mothers of the worlds. One who wants beauty of form, the gandharvas; one who wants a woman, the apsaras Urvasi; one who wants mastery over everything should worship him who is set highest. One who wants fame should worship Sacrifice itself; one who wants a treasury, Varuna; one who wants learning, the lord of the mountain; and for the sake of a good marriage, Uma the true wife. For the sake of dharma, him whose renown is highest; a man drawing out his line should worship the fathers; one who wants guarding, the good spirits; one who wants vigour, the hosts of the Maruts.

One who wants a kingdom should worship the Manus, who are gods; one working harm on another, Nirrti; one who wants his desires, Soma; and one with no desire at all, the supreme Person.
