Child, this doubt of yours is a fitting one, for you are compassionate; and gentle one, I am urged by it to show the Bhagavan's power. Nor is what you say of me untrue, sir, in the way you describe me; for you speak of me so far only because you have not known what is higher than I am. By whose own light the universe is lit, by that light I give light, as the sun does, and fire, and the moon, and the constellations and planets and stars. Salutation to that Bhagavan, Vasudeva, on whom we meditate, by whose maya, hard to overcome, they call me the teacher of the world. By that same maya, which is ashamed to stand in the path of his glance, those of poor understanding are bewildered and boast, saying mine and I.

Substance, action, time, nature, and the living self: brahmin, in truth there is no reality other than Vasudeva, nor beyond him. The Vedas have Narayana for their end; the gods are born of Narayana's body; the worlds have Narayana for their end; the sacrifices have Narayana for their end. Yoga has Narayana for its end; austerity has Narayana for its end; knowledge has Narayana for its end; the final going has Narayana for its end.
