19Forest trees, herbs, creepers, those whose pith lies in the bark, climbing plants, and trees: their sap runs upward, they are mostly of darkness, they feel within, and each is distinct. 20The eighth is the creation of animals, reckoned as of twenty-eight kinds. They do not know, they are heavy with darkness, they know by smell, and they do not perceive within the heart. 21The cow, the goat, the buffalo, the black antelope, the boar, the gavaya, the ruru, and the sheep and the camel as well: best of the good, these are the cloven-hoofed beasts. 22The ass, the horse, the mule, the gaura, the sarabha and the camari: these, Ksatta, are the single-hoofed. Now hear of the animals with five nails.
23Dog, jackal, wolf, tiger, cat, hare and porcupine; lion, monkey, elephant, tortoise, iguana, and the crocodile and the rest. 24Heron, vulture, crane, hawk, bhasa, bear-bird and peacock; swan, sarasa crane, cakravaka, crow, owl and the rest are the birds. 25The ninth, Ksatta, is the one whose current runs downward, and it is of one kind, that of human beings. In them passion is in excess; they are given over to work, and they take sorrow for happiness.
