Though her husband had made it plain to her in this way, her senses churned by desire, she caught hold of the brahmin sage's garment, shameless as a low woman. Then, seeing his wife would not be held back from that wrong act, he bowed to what was fated and lay with her in a place apart. Afterwards he touched water, held in his breath, kept his speech still, and meditating, muttered over the stainless everlasting light of Brahman. But Diti, ashamed of that blameworthy act, Bharata, came up to the brahmin sage and spoke to him with her face bent down. Brahmin, let the bull among beings not kill this fruit of my womb; for Rudra is the lord of beings, and it is against him that I have done the wrong.

Salutation to Rudra, the great god, the fierce one, the giver of rain; to the kindly one who has laid the rod down, and to the wrathful one who holds the rod up. Let him be gracious to us, our sister's husband, the revered one whose kindness is wide, the god, husband of Sati, gracious to women, whom even a hunter would pity.
