From the dark kind as it altered, urged by the strength of the Bhagavan, the subtle element of sound came to be; from that, the sky, and hearing, which reaches sound. The wise know the marks of sound: that it carries a meaning, that it points to one who speaks, and that it is the subtle element of the sky. These are the workings that mark the sky: it gives room to beings, it makes an outside and an inside, and it is the seat of the breath, of the senses and of the self. From the sky, from the subtle element of sound, as it altered by the going of time, touch came to be; and from that, the wind, and the skin, which gathers touch.

Soft and hard, cold and hot: this is what makes touch touch, and it is the subtle element of the wind. Moving things, gathering them together, arriving, carrying things and sounds along, and being the very self of all the senses: these mark the wind by its work. From the wind, from the subtle element of touch, stirred by fate, form came to be; out of that rose fire, and the eye, which takes in form. That a thing has shape, that it has quality, that what shows itself stands in a form, and being fire at all: these, good woman, are the workings of fire and of the subtle element of form. Giving light, cooking, drinking and eating, and the crushing of cold: these are the workings of fire, and drying up as well, and hunger and thirst.
