Then two messengers of Yama arrive, terrible, their eyes full of fury. Seeing them, his heart shaking with fright, he lets go his dung and his water. They wrap him in a body made for torment, tie his neck fast with their cords, and lead him off down a long road, as the king's men lead a man to punishment. His heart split open by their threatening, trembling all over, eaten at along the way by dogs, in his misery he remembers the wrong he has done. Caught by hunger and thirst, scorched by the sun and by the wind off forest fires, on a track of burning sand, beaten on the back with a whip, he moves on with no strength left, where there is no shade and no water.

Falling here and falling there, worn out, fainting and getting up again, he is taken swiftly by that most evil road to the house of Yama. Ninety-nine thousand leagues of road, and he is brought over them in three short hours, or in two, and comes to the torments.
