This is not to be taught to a cruel man, nor ever to one who has had no training, nor to the stiff-necked, nor to the split-minded, nor to one who carries dharma like a flag. It is not to be taught to the greedy, nor to one whose mind has settled into his house, nor ever to one who has no devotion to me, nor to those who hate the ones devoted to me. Let it be given to one who trusts, who is devoted, who has been trained, who does not carp, who has made friends with living beings, who is glad to serve, in whom detachment from outward things has been born, whose mind is quiet, who has no spite in him, who is clean, and to whom I am dearer than whatever is dear.

Mother, the man who hears this once with trust, or who speaks it out with his mind on me, comes by that to the road that is mine.
