1While the two of them held to their hatred in this way, a very long time passed over the son-in-law and over the father-in-law alike. 2When Daksa was consecrated by Brahma, highest-placed of all, to the overlordship of every lord of creatures, pride came upon him. 3Having sacrificed with the Vajapeya and overborne those most given to Brahman, he set about the highest of rites, the one called Brhaspatisava. 4At it were all the brahmin sages, the sages of the gods, the fathers and the gods, for whom the rites of blessing had been done, and their wives beside their husbands. 5Hearing it talked of overhead by those who travel the sky, Sati, Daksa's daughter, the goddess, learned of the great festival of her father's sacrifice;
6and she saw the wives of the foremost lesser gods going there from every quarter, borne in sky-chariots with their beloveds, gold at their throats, finely dressed; 7and seeing them close to her own dwelling, their eyes restless, their earrings burnished, out of eagerness she spoke to her husband, the god, the lord of beings.
