Verse 31

²⁵Daksa, praising him gladly, with folded hands and himself held in check, came for refuge to the lord of sacrifice, who had taken the highest seat prepared for him, the highest teacher of the world's makers, ringed by Sunanda and Nanda and his other followers. ²⁶You are clean, in your own place, where every state of understanding stops: awareness alone, one, past fear, with maya shut out. And yet by that same maya you take on the state of a person and dwell in it, as though not wholly clean, though you depend on nothing but yourself. ²⁷Spotless one, we do not know that truth of yours: by Rudra's curse our minds are pinned to the doing of works. Bhagavan, what we know is this threefold thing called sacrifice, which has dharma for its mark, and for its sake these arrangements set over the gods.

²⁸On the road of birth there is no shelter: a rough country of long trouble, hunted through by the fierce snake that is the ender, with the mirage of the senses, pits of the pairs of opposites, the fear of savage beasts, a forest fire of grief. When does that caravan of the ignorant, bearing the great load of self and house, driven on by desire, reach the dwelling that is your feet, giver of refuge? ²⁹Giver of gifts, your feet are worth honouring even by sages who cling to nothing, and everything a man could want is in them. If the world of ignorance mutters against me for asking a boon here, and casts me off, though my mind is set on them, I do not count it, since your grace is the highest thing.

³⁰Those who wear bodies, Brahma and the others, have had their knowing of the self carried off by your deep maya and sleep on in the dark; even now they do not know that truth of yours which rests in the self. Be gracious, kin to those who bow. ³¹What a man sees while he grasps at things divided into separate meanings is not your own form. You are held to be the ground of the knowing and of the thing known and of the quality, standing apart from all that is made of maya.
