Sanaka and his brothers, and Narada, and Rbhu, Hamsa, Aruni and Yati: these sons of Brahma never lived in houses, for their seed went upward. Falsehood was Unright's wife, slayer of enemies, and she bore a pair, Pretence and Trickery; and Nirrti, who had no child, took them for his own. From those two came Greed and Cunning, great-minded one; from them Anger and Harm; and from them Kali, with Foul Speech for his sister. On Foul Speech, Kali begot Fear and Death, best of the good; and from those two came a pair, Torment and Hell. That is the counter-creation, told you in brief, blameless one. A man who hears this holy account three times shakes the stain off himself.

Now, best of the Kurus, I shall tell the line of Svayambhuva Manu, whose fame is holy, and who was born of a share of a share of Hari.
