Here and there stood bright archways in the shape of sea-monsters, plantain trunks with their bunches still on them, young betel palms and the like, and at every door mango leaves and cloths and garlands and strings of pearls hung down, with pots of water and lamps set beside them. The city was decked out everywhere with walls, gate-towers and halls faced with gold, and the tops of its fine mansions shone. Its squares, streets, terraces and roads were swept and smeared with sandal, and strewn with parched grain and whole rice, with flowers and fruit and grain and offerings. Wherever the women of the city caught sight of Dhruva on the road, they brought him white mustard and whole rice, curd and water, durva grass, flowers and fruit,

and out of motherly love spoke true blessings over him. Listening to their sweet singing, he went into his father's house.
