Anga the royal sage set going a horse sacrifice, a great rite; and the gods did not come to it, though the speakers of Brahman called them. The priests there were astonished, and said to the man the sacrifice was being made for: The gods do not take the offerings that are poured for them. King, your offerings are not spoiled, and they were got with trust. The metres are not gone stale, and men who keep their vows have put them to work. We know of no slight to the gods here, not the least, that they should refuse their own shares, they who are the witnesses of what is done. Hearing what the twice-born said, Anga, for whom the sacrifice was being made, was heavy-hearted; and with their leave he spoke, to ask the men of the assembly.

The gods do not come when they are called, and they take no draughts here. Lords of the assembly, tell me: what blameworthy thing have I done?
