36For the states of being, high and low, that follow on the mixing of the strands, there is no safety: whatever they promise, the Lord breaks. 37Lord of men, for the moving and the standing, wrapped about with body and senses and breath and understanding and self, there is one who shines within the heart, present everywhere and turned inward, the knower and master of the field. Know him for the Bhagavan: that I am. 38In him this shows itself as real and unreal; discernment shakes maya off as one shakes off the thought of a snake in a garland. To him, whose being is forever free and clean and awake, whose nature has thrown off the mire of works, I go for refuge.
39By the devotion that plays about the petals of his lotus feet the good untie the knotted lodging of their works. Not so those whose minds are not emptied, though they be strivers who have dammed the currents. Serve him for your refuge, Vasudeva. 40Great is the hardship here for those who have not the Lord for their boat, who try in pain to cross the ocean of becoming, where the band of six are the crocodiles. Make the worshipful foot of Hari the Bhagavan your raft, and get over that trouble, the sea that is hard to cross.
