Arci was the name of the great queen, his wife, who followed him to the forest, tender and not made for it, for whom even to touch the ground with her feet was much. By her utter steadiness in her husband's vow and duty, by her waiting on him, and by carrying her body through the life of the sages, she found no pain in it, worn thin though she was: the touch and the honour of the one she loved contented her. When she saw the body of her husband, the earth's lord and dear as her own self, with all its awareness gone out of it, that true wife lamented a little and then laid it on a pyre on the shoulder of a hill. Having done what was to be done, bathed in the water of the river, having given the water-offering to her husband of noble works, having bowed to the thirty gods who stand in heaven and gone three times round, she entered the fire with her mind on her husband's feet.

Seeing that true wife follow Prthu, best of heroes, her husband, the wives of the gods, who give boons, praised her by the thousand along with the gods. Making a rain of flowers there on the shoulder of Mandara, while the drums of the immortals sounded, they spoke to one another.
