Get up, get up, royal sage. This earth girdled by the sea is afraid of robbers and of men who are kshatriyas in name only. You ought to protect her. Wailing so, the young woman who had followed her husband into the forest fell at his feet and cried, and let the tears run down. She built a pyre of wood, laid her husband's body on it, set it alight, and, still wailing, put her mind on dying after him. Then a certain brahmin, a friend from an earlier time, master of himself, comforting her with sweet and gentle words, spoke to her as she wept, my lord. Who are you? Whose are you? And who is this lying here, for whom you grieve? Do you know me, your friend, with whom you once went about?

Do you remember yourself at all, friend, you who never knew your own companion? You left me and went off looking for a place, taken with the good things of earth.
