The teaching that goes forward and the teaching that turns back are what is named the Pancalas. From the ear, from Srutadhara, one goes by the way of the fathers or the way of the gods. Asuri is the organ, the lower gate, and coupling is the pleasure of village people. The generative part is called Durmada, and the anus is called Nirrti. Vaisasa is hell, and the organ of excretion is Lubdhaka. Now hear from me of the two blind ones: they are the hands and the feet, and joined with them the Person goes and acts. The inner chamber is the heart, and the mind is called Visuci. There, by what the mind carries, he comes to bewilderment, or to calm, or to gladness.

Just as the mind, smeared with the strands, is changed or changes things, so far is the self, which only looks on, made to follow its workings. The body is the chariot, the senses its horses, the year its speed; and it gets nowhere. Its two wheels are the two kinds of work, its banner the three strands, its bindings the five breaths.
