Marici, Atri and Angiras, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Bhrgu and Vasistha, and myself at the end of them: all of us who speak of Brahman. Even now, lords of speech though they are, for all their austerity and knowing and gathered mind, they look and do not see the highest Lord, who sees. Moving in the Brahman that is sound, hard to cross and wide in its spread, they worship what the marks of the mantras have cut into parts, and do not know the highest. When the Bhagavan, borne in a man's own being, shows him favour, that man lets go of a mind set fast in the world and in the Veda. So, Barhismat, do not look for the real in works, which shine as though they were worth something only because we do not know. They touch the ear and never touch the thing itself.

They do not know their own world, where the god Janardana is. Their wits full of smoke, not knowing that, they call the Veda a matter of rites. You have covered the whole round of the earth with grass, its tips to the east. Stiff with pride at the great killing, you do not know what work is higher. That work is the pleasing of Hari, and that knowing is the mind that goes to him.
