All the things the senses reach come into the mind, each in its order and by groups, and go away again; and every one of these people has a mind. In a mind that stands on clarity alone and keeps close beside the Bhagavan, all this shows up as a colouring laid on, the way darkness is laid on the moon. This feeling of I and mine is not cut away from the Person so long as the array of understanding, mind, senses, objects and strands goes on, which has no beginning. In sleep, in a swoon, in great affliction, when the going of the breath is blocked, the knowing that says I does not stir; nor does it in death, nor in burning fever.

In the womb, and in childhood too, since it is not yet full, the elevenfold subtle form of the young man is not seen, as the moon is not seen on the night it goes dark. Though the thing is not there at all, the round of birth does not stop for one who broods on the things of sense, as in a dream trouble keeps on coming.
