Verse 20
The hills and rivers of Bharata, and the roads out of it· Verses 16–20
16In this region of Bharata too there are many mountains and rivers: Malaya, Mangalaprastha, Mainaka, Trikuta, Rsabha, Kutaka, Kollaka, Sahya, Devagiri, Rsyamuka, Srisaila, Venkata, Mahendra, Varidhara, Vindhya, Suktiman, Rksagiri, Pariyatra, Drona, Citrakuta, Govardhana, Raivataka, Kakubha, Nila, Gokamukha, Indrakila and Kamagiri, and others besides, hills by the hundred thousand; and the streams and rivers that rise on their flanks are past counting. 17The people of Bharata touch the water of these rivers, which make clean by their names alone, and touch it with their whole selves. 18Candravasa, Tamraparni, Avatoda, Krtamala, Vaihayasi, Kaveri, Veni, Payasvini, Sarkaravarta, Tungabhadra, Krsna, Venya, Bhimarathi, Godavari, Nirvindhya, Payosni, Tapi, Reva, Surasa, Narmada, Carmanvati, Sindhu; the two streams Andha and Sona; Mahanadi, Vedasmrti, Rsikulya, Trisama, Kausiki, Mandakini, Yamuna, Sarasvati, Drsadvati, Gomati, Sarayu, Rodhasvati, Saptavati, Susoma, Satadru, Candrabhaga, Marudvrdha, Vitasta, Asikni and Visva: these are the great rivers.
19In this region alone, for men who have got their birth here, many courses of the self are laid down in turn, divine, human and hellish, by the works they themselves began, white or red or black in colour; and all of them are laid down for all of them, as the ordering of the classes runs, and release comes about here too. 20And there is that state whose mark is a yoga of devotion with no other cause behind it, given to the Bhagavan, the self of every being, who is not the not-self, who cannot be spoken, who has no resting place, the supreme Self, Vasudeva; a state reached by way of the burning through of the knot of ignorance that is the ground of the many courses, when a man falls into company with the men of the great Person.
