The four cities on Manasottara· Verses 7–12
7So they teach that the circuit around the Manasottara mountain is ninety-five million one hundred thousand yojanas. On it, east of Meru, is Indra's city called Devadhani; to the south Yama's, called Samyamani; to the west Varuna's, called Nimlocani; to the north the moon's, called Vibhavari. In them fall sunrise, midday, sunset and midnight, which set living beings to their work and take them from it, each at its own time, on the four sides of Meru. 8For those who live there the sun always burns as though it had reached the middle of their day, and he keeps the mountain to his left as he goes around it by the right.
9Where he rises, he goes down at the point on the same line; wherever he burns with his streaming heat, at the point on the same line he puts to sleep. Those who might look for him do not see him once he has gone there. 10When he sets out from Indra's city he reaches Yama's in fifteen ghatikas, covering twenty-two million five hundred thousand yojanas and a further one million two hundred and fifty thousand, and something more. 11So from there to Varuna's city, and the moon's, and Indra's again. In the same way the other moving lights, the moon and the rest, with the fixed stars, rise together in the wheel of lights and go down together.
12So in one muhurta the sun's chariot, made of the three Vedas, goes three million four hundred thousand and eight hundred yojanas, turning about among the four cities.
