The dolphin of lights, and the words said to it· Verses 4–9

Some, in the holding of the mind in yoga, describe this array of lights as having the shape of a dolphin, and as the body of the Bhagavan Vasudeva. Its head is down and its body is coiled, and Dhruva is set at the tip of its tail. On the tail are the lord of creatures, Fire, Indra and Dharma; at the root of the tail Dhatr and Vidhatr; at the hips the seven sages. Its body is coiled to the right, and the star-houses of the northward course are placed on its right side and those of the southward course on its left, so that, as in a dolphin lying curved in its coil, the parts on both sides come out equal in number. On its back is the goat's road, and on its belly the Ganga of the sky.

Punarvasu and Pusya on the right and left haunches; Ardra and Aslesa on the right and left hind feet; Abhijit and Uttarasadha on the right and left nostrils in that order; Sravana and Purvasadha on the right and left eyes; Dhanistha and Mula on the right and left ears. Set the eight star-houses from Magha on, which belong to the southward course, on the ribs of the left side, and in the same way set those from Mrgasirsa on, which belong to the northward course, on the ribs of the right side, taking them in reverse order. Satabhisa and Jyestha are to be laid on the right and left shoulders. Agasti on the upper jaw, Yama on the lower, Angaraka on the mouth, Sanaiscara on the loins, Brhaspati on the hump, the sun on the chest, Narayana in the heart, the moon in the mind, Usanas at the navel, the two Asvins at the breasts, Budha in the breath going in and out, Rahu at the throat, the comets all over the limbs, and all the hosts of stars in the hairs.

This is the very form of the Bhagavan Visnu, made of all the gods. Day after day, at the joining of light and dark, clean and holding his speech, a man should stand looking at it and say: Homage to the world of light, to the going of time, to the lord of those who do not blink. On the great Person let us think. It is made of the wandering lights, the star-houses and the stars; it is the god's own shape, and it takes away wrong from those who make the words at the three joinings of the day. For the man who bows to it or remembers it at those three, the wrong born in that time is quickly undone.
