Verse 18
Atala, Vitala, and Bali put back below· Verses 16–18
16Now in Atala lives the demon Bala, son of Maya, who made here the ninety-six kinds of maya, some of which those who work maya hold to this day. From his mouth as he yawned three sorts of women came out: the ones who go where they will, the ones full of desire, and the ones who run after men. When a man enters that hollow they get him ready with the juice called hataka, and then with their playing glances, their fond smiles, their talk and their embraces they take their pleasure with him as they please. Once he has drunk it the man thinks himself the lord, thinks himself perfected, takes himself for the strength of ten thousand great elephants, and boasts like one blind with drink.
17Below that, in Vitala, the revered Hara, lord of the hataka gold, surrounded by his own companions and hosts of beings, stays there as Bhava, joined with Bhavani, to make strong the creation of the lord of creatures. From the power of the two of them the finest of rivers rises, called Hataki. There Citrabhanu, kindled by the wind, drinks it with his strength, and what he spits out is the gold called hataka, which the men and the women of the demon lords' inner rooms wear for ornament. 18Below that, in Sutala, is Bali son of Virocana, wide in fame, whose verses are holy. The Bhagavan, wanting to do a kindness to great Indra, took a body from Aditi, and in the form of a boy, a dwarf, took the three worlds from him; and by that same kindness of the Bhagavan he was set below again. He holds a rich good fortune such as Indra and the rest do not have, and worshipping by his own duty that very Bhagavan who is worth worshipping, he lives there still today with his fear gone.
