Verse 31
Talatala down to Patala· Verses 28–31
28Below that, in Talatala, is Maya, lord of the Danavas and master of the three cities. The revered enemy of the cities, wanting the three worlds well, burned his three cities down; and by his favour Maya got a place. He is the teacher of those who work maya, guarded by the great god, and honoured, with his fear of the disc gone. 29Below that, in Mahatala, is the group called Krodhavasa, many-headed snakes born of Kadru, with Kuhaka, Taksaka, Kaliya, Susena and the rest at their head. Their hoods are great, and they take their pleasure, careless now and then, in the company of their wives, children, friends and households, though they are never done starting up in fear of the king of birds, who carries the Person.
30Below that, in Rasatala, live the Daiteyas and Danavas called Panis, the Nivatakavacas, the Kaleyas and the dwellers in Hiranyapura, enemies of the gods from their birth, of great strength and great daring, but with the pride of their strength broken by the light of Hari alone, the Bhagavan whose power is felt through all the worlds; and they live like things that lie in holes. They fear Indra when Sarama, his messenger, speaks the words of the spell to them. 31Below that, in Patala, live the lords of the world of snakes, Vasuki at their head, and Sankha, Kulika, Mahasankha, Sveta, Dhananjaya, Dhrtarastra, Sankhacuda, Kambala, Asvatara, Devadatta and the rest, with great hoods and great anger. Their heads are five, seven, ten, a hundred, a thousand, and the great jewels set in their hoods shine and blow away with their own light the heaped darkness of the hollow of Patala.
