Verse 19
The boiling oil, the copper plain, the sword leaves· Verses 13–19
13One who is cruel here and cooks animals or birds while they are still breathing, a man without pity, whom even the eaters of men reproach, is cooked in boiling oil in Kumbhipaka in the other place by Yama's followers. 14One who here wrongs his father, or a brahmin, or Brahman is put into the hell called Kalasutra, a copper floor ten thousand yojanas around, heated fiercely by the sun above and the fire below. Burning inside and outside with hunger and thirst, he sits, lies down, tosses, stands and runs about there for as many thousands of years as an animal has hairs. 15One who here leaves the path of his own Veda with no hardship to drive him and takes up a false teaching is driven into Asipatravana and struck with a whip. Running this way and that, cut over his whole body by palm leaves that are two-edged swords, crying out that he is killed, fainting from the greatest pain, he falls at every step: the destroyer of his own duty eats the fruit of following what is false.
16A king or a king's man who here punishes one who should not be punished, or lays bodily punishment on a brahmin, that worst of wrongdoers falls into the hell Sukaramukha in the other place. There his limbs are pressed by very strong ones as sugarcane is pressed here; he cries out in pain, faints from time to time and is brought to distress, like those held here with no fault found in them. 17One whose own living is arranged by the Person, who knows the difference another's pain makes, and who yet inflicts pain on beings whose living the Lord has arranged and who do not know that difference, falls for that malice into Andhakupa in the other place. There he is set upon on every side by those creatures, cattle and deer and birds and reptiles, mosquitoes and lice and bugs and flies and whatever else he wronged; in the dark, his sleep and his rest broken, finding nowhere to stand, he wanders about like a living being in a poor body.
18One who here eats whatever comes to him without sharing it out and without making the five offerings, living in the manner of a crow, falls into Krmibhojana, the lowest of hells, in the other place. There, in a pit of worms a hundred thousand yojanas wide, he becomes a worm himself and is eaten by worms, a worm-eater feeding on worms, and he torments himself for as long as his term lasts, having eaten what was neither given nor offered. 19A man who here by theft or by force carries off gold or jewels or the like, from a brahmin or from anyone else, with no hardship to drive him, is stripped out of his skin in the other place, king, by Yama's men with tongs and with balls of hot iron.
