What the sun does to mist· Verses 13–19

By austerity, by chastity, by quieting the mind and holding down the senses, by giving away, by truth and cleanness, by restraint and by observance, the steady, who know dharma and who have trust, throw off wrong born of body and speech and understanding, however great it is, as fire throws off a thicket of bamboo. Some, given over to Vasudeva, shake off wrong altogether by devotion alone, as the sun shakes off mist. A man with wrong on him is not made clean by austerity and the rest, king, as he is by giving his life to Krsna and by serving Krsna's people. This is the one straight road in the world, safe, with fear from nowhere: the road where the good are, well-conducted, given over to Narayana.

Atonements performed do not make clean a man who has turned his face away from Narayana, king of kings, any more than rivers make clean a jar that has held liquor. Those who have once here set their minds on Krsna's lotus feet, minds in love with what he is, do not see Yama or his men with their nooses even in a dream. Their amends are made.
