This man was full of what he had heard, a house of character and conduct and good qualities, holding to his vow, gentle, restrained, truthful, versed in the sacred words, and clean. He waited on his teacher, on the fire, on guests and on his elders, without I-making; a good man, friend to every being, sparing of speech, finding fault with none. One day this brahmin went into the forest to do what his father had told him, and coming back from there he carried fruit and flowers, firewood and kusa grass. He saw a man of low birth full of desire, with a bondwoman; and he had drunk sweet liquor, and her eyes were rolling with it.

She was drunk, her waistband slipping, half uncovered, with no shame left; and he was playing and singing along with her and laughing there at her side. Seeing her held in an arm smeared with desire, he fell all at once under the sway of the one who lies in the heart, and was bewildered.
