So do not lead this man away. He has made amends for all his wrong, in that as he was dying he took up the Bhagavan's name. As a signal, in mockery, as a filler in a chant, or even in contempt: the taking up of the name of him whom nothing hinders is known to carry off wrong with nothing left. A man who has fallen, or stumbled, or been broken, or bitten, or burned, or struck, and says Hari with no will in it, does not deserve the torment. The great sages knew and set out the atonements for sins: heavy ones and light ones, and atonements heavy and light to match them. By those, by austerity and giving and muttering and the rest, those wrongs are made clean. But the heart born of wrongdoing is not; and that too is made clean by serving the Lord's feet.

Knowing or not knowing, when the name of him whose renown is highest is sung out, it burns up a man's wrong as fire burns fuel. As a medicine of the greatest strength taken by chance works its own effect even in one who does not know it, so does a sacred word when it is spoken.
