The three heads of Visvarupa· Verses 1–5

Visvarupa had three heads, Bharata: one that drank soma, one that drank wine, and one that ate food. So we have heard. At the sacred grass he gave the gods their share openly and aloud, for the gods were his fathers, king, and he did it with respect. And that same one gave a share out of sight to the demons; for as the officiant he carried a share to them, being under the sway of love for his mother. The lord of the gods saw that slighting of the gods, that lie inside dharma, and in fear he cut his heads off at once, in anger. The head that drank soma became a francolin, the one that drank wine a sparrow, and the one that ate food a partridge.
