6A lord though he was, he took the killing of a brahmin upon his own cupped hands; and at the end of a year, for the cleansing of living beings, that stain 7Indra divided into four, among earth and water and trees and women. The earth took a quarter, for the boon of having its own holes filled in. 8On the earth the shape the brahmin-killing takes is barren salt ground. The trees took a quarter, for the boon of growing again where they are cut. 9In them the brahmin-killing shows as the sap that runs. Women took a quarter of the stain, for the boon of desire without end. 10In them the stain shows month by month as the flow. The waters took a quarter, for the boon of swelling whatever is put into them.
11In them it shows as bubbles and foam, and throwing those aside when they are seen, one takes the water clean. Then Tvastr, whose son had been killed, poured an offering for an enemy against Indra.
