Listen with your attention, king, to this old telling as I heard it from the mouth of Dvaipayana, and from Narada, and from Devala as well. He had ten thousand thousands of wives; and though the king wanted a line to follow him, he got no children by them. He had beauty and generosity, youth, birth, learning, mastery and fortune, and every good quality besides, and still the worry of a man whose wife bears nothing came upon him.
