8Then the revered son of Badarayana heard out Pariksit's question, and welcomed the words of a man who had faith, and spoke. 9Listen with your attention, king, to this old telling as I heard it from the mouth of Dvaipayana, and from Narada, and from Devala as well. 10There was a king over the whole earth among the Surasenas, king, known as Citraketu, for whom the earth gave whatever was wished. 11He had ten thousand thousands of wives; and though the king wanted a line to follow him, he got no children by them. 12He had beauty and generosity, youth, birth, learning, mastery and fortune, and every good quality besides, and still the worry of a man whose wife bears nothing came upon him.
13None of it gave him any joy: not all his wealth, nor his queens with their lovely eyes, nor this earth over which he was lord.
