Sounded out in this way, king, by a sage who already knew, he bowed low in respect and, wanting a child, then said to the sage: Revered one, what is not known to yogins whose guilt is broken, by their austerity and knowledge and gathering of mind, outside embodied beings or within them? Still, since you ask, brahmin, I will say what has been turning in me, though you know it already, being set on to it by your own leave. The riches of empire and mastery, which even the world's guardians pray for, do not gladden me, who have no child, any more than other things gladden a man who wants food and water. So save me, greatly favoured one, from the dark my fathers have gone into with me. Bring it about for us that by a child we may cross what cannot be crossed.
