45Noticing that the child had been lying a long time, the thoughtful woman told the nurse: Bring my son to me, good woman. 46She went up to him as he lay, and seeing his eyes turned up and breath and senses and self gone out of him, she cried, I am destroyed, and fell to the ground. 47Hearing that voice of hers, so full of pain, as she beat her breast hard with both hands, the queen went quickly in to where her child was and saw the boy, her son, suddenly dead. 48She fell to the ground in her swelling grief and lost her senses, her hair and her clothing coming loose. 49Then the people of the king's inner rooms, men and women alike, heard the weeping and came, sharing the same trouble and greatly pained; and the women who had done the crime wept falsely.
50Hearing that his son was dead, with nothing to show what had ended him, his sight gone, falling and stumbling on the way, overcome with grief because his love was bound to the boy, he fainted; his officers came after him and brahmins stood about him. 51He fell at the feet of the dead boy, his hair and his clothing loose. He drew long breaths, and his throat was stopped by the choking of tears, and he could not speak.
