Now I will tell you of Kasyapa's heirs, the sons of Diti, among whom were the glorious Prahlada, who was the Lord's own, and Bali. Diti had only two heirs, saluted by the Daityas and the Danavas: they are named as Hiranyakasipu and Hiranyaksa. Hiranyakasipu's wife was a Danava woman named Kayadhu, the daughter of Jambha, given to him, and she bore four sons. Samhrada first, then Anuhrada, then Hrada, and Prahlada. Their sister, named Simhika, conceived Rahu by Vipracit. It was his head that Hari took off with the disc as he was drinking the nectar. Then Krti, the wife of Samhrada, bore Pancajana. Hrada's wife Dhamani bore Vatapi and Ilvala. It was Ilvala who cooked Vatapi for Agastya when Agastya was his guest.

Of Anuhrada, on Surya, were born Baskala and Mahisa. Virocana was Prahlada's son, and by his wife Devi, Bali was born to him. From him, on Asana, came a hundred sons with Bana as the eldest. What Bana's power was, and how worth the telling, will be said later. Bana, by worshipping the lord of the mountain, won the headship of his troop, and at his side the revered one stays even now, keeping his city.
