55Saying, So be it, and taking it on, king, high-minded Diti received the child from Kasyapa and kept the vow properly. 56Knowing what his mother's sister meant to do, giver of honour, shrewd Indra attended on Diti where she stayed in the hermitage, and served her. 57Every day he brought her from the forest, each thing at its own time, flowers, fruit, roots, firewood and kusa grass, leaves, shoots, earth and water. 58So, king, wanting to catch a flaw in her keeping of the vow, Indra served her crookedly, as a hunter of deer does who goes in the shape of a deer. 59Bent on it, he found no flaw in the vow, lord of the earth, and Indra fell into keen anxiety: by what means will things go well for me here?
60But once at twilight, with the leavings of her meal on her, worn thin by the vow, without touching water and with unwashed feet, she fell asleep, confused about the rule.
