While he is still a boy the one who understands should take up here the dharma of the Lord's own. Human birth is hard to come by, and though it does not last, it gives what is worth having. For what a man has here is this: to come close to the feet of Visnu, since he is dear to all beings, the lord of their self, their friend. Daityas, the pleasure that comes through the senses is had by embodied beings everywhere from the mere having of a body, by fate and without effort, exactly as pain is. So no labour should be spent on that, for nothing comes of it but the spending of a life. By such labour a man does not find his safety, the lotus feet of Mukunda.

So one who has any skill, set down here in the round of birth, should work for that safety while the human body is still strong and has not fallen apart. A man's life is a hundred years, and half of it is lost to one who has not mastered himself, since he lies at night asleep, carried off into blind dark.
