Setting this world down in yourself, in the waters of dissolution, you lie in your own self, tasting your own happiness, not striving; eyes closed by yoga, sleep drunk up in yourself, resting in the fourth, joined neither to darkness nor to the strands. It is this same body of yours, whose law of nature is driven by your own power of time and hidden in yourself; and from the navel of one lying on the Endless in the waters, waking from that gathering, the great lotus came, as a banyan comes from its tiny seed. The seer born from it, seeing nothing but the lotus, thought of you, the seed spread all through himself, as outside himself, and plunged into the waters a hundred years without finding you. When the shoot has come up, how could anyone lay hold of the seed?

Then he who is born of himself, astonished, kept his place on the lotus; and when in time fierce austerity had made his nature clean, Lord, he saw you in himself, spread through what is made of elements and senses and mind, fine as a scent in the earth. So Virinci was gladdened, seeing the great Person, rich with a thousand faces and feet and heads and hands and thighs and noses and mouths and ears and eyes, with ornaments and weapons, made of maya, set together in a way the good can mark. For him you took a body with a horse's head and killed those two of great strength who hated the Veda, called Madhu and Kaitabha, and brought the ranks of the scriptures back. Those two were passion and darkness; clarity, they say, is your dearest body.

So, by descents as man, as beast, as sage, as god, as fish, you make the worlds shine and kill those who go against the world. Great Person, you guard dharma as it runs age by age; hidden in the Kali age, you are called the one of three ages, and that is you too.
