8For men who want the true dharma there is no dharma higher than this: laying down the rod against living beings, the rod that rises out of mind and speech and body. 9Some, knowing men and the best of those who know sacrifice, striving no longer, offer up the sacrifices made of works into the restraint of the self, which knowledge has lit. 10Seeing a man about to sacrifice with things, the animals are afraid: this pitiless one, who understands nothing, will surely kill me and fill his own belly. 11So one who knows dharma should be content even with the food of sages, as fate brings it to him, and day by day do the acts that belong to the fixed times and to the occasions.
