He should conquer desire by making no plans; anger by letting desire go; greed by seeing that wealth is no good; and fear by looking into what is real. Grief and confusion by looking closely; a show of piety by serving the great; the things that get in the way of yoga by silence; and harming by not striving after desire and the rest. The pain that comes from other beings he should throw off by pity, and what comes from fate by settling the mind; what comes from himself by the strength of yoga, and sleep by keeping to clarity. Passion and darkness by clarity, and clarity itself by growing quiet; and all of this a man conquers easily by devotion to his teacher.

If a man takes his teacher, who is the Bhagavan in person and holds out the lamp of knowledge, for a mortal and an unreal thing, then all he has heard is like the bathing of an elephant.
