41They call the body a chariot and the senses its horses; the mind, which rules the senses, the reins; the things of sense the roads; the understanding the driver; and clarity the great frame the Lord has made. 42The axle is the ten breaths; the two wheels are wrong and right; self-regard is there, and the living being is the one who rides. His bow, they recite, is the syllable Om, the arrow is the living being, and the mark is the Highest itself. 43Attachment and hatred and greed, grief and confusion, fear, pride, being honoured and being slighted, spite, deceit, harming and jealousy; 44passion, carelessness, hunger and sleep: such are the enemies. Their nature is passion and darkness, and now and then clarity.
45So long as a man holds this chariot of a human body harnessed under his own hand, sharpened by worship at the feet of the greatest, carrying the sword of knowledge, with the Unfallen for his strength, his enemies thrown down, content in his own joy and grown quiet, he may let all this go. 46If he does not, the untrue senses that are his horses, and the driver with them, carry the careless man off the road and drop him among the robbers that are things of sense; and those robbers throw him, horses and driver and all, into the blind dark well of the round of birth, where the fear of death is wide.
